Trelawne · between countryside and coast

Trelawne lies in the parish of Pelynt in South East Cornwall, inland from the coast around Looe, Talland Bay and Polperro. The historic manor is a distinctive local landmark, while the surrounding parish brings together farming, village life and tourism. It is a place to explore through nearby communities and coastal paths, rather than a large town with a single shopping centre.

Start with the Pelynt area when planning a visit. This guide leads with Trelawne near Looe; the final section explains other similar names that can appear in searches. The photograph shows Trelawne Manor in April 2011. It illustrates the historic building, and should not be used as a picture of current accommodation or facilities.

02

The manor · layers of Cornish history

Historic England lists Trelawne House at Grade II*. Its account describes a building with medieval origins and many later changes, including substantial nineteenth-century work by architect J. P. St Aubyn. Reading the listing helps explain why the surviving house brings together features from different periods. The nearby lodge has its own separate heritage record.

Today the manor forms part of Trelawne Manor Holiday Park, operated by John Fowler Holidays. Use the operator’s website for accommodation, facilities and any access enquiries. The heritage designation is not an invitation to enter private buildings or holiday accommodation. This independent local guide is separate from the holiday park and does not handle its bookings.

03

Talland Bay · make time for the shore

Talland Bay offers a nearby coastal outing between Looe and Polperro. The National Trust describes beaches on either side of the small bay and a church above its eastern side. It makes a natural place to pause during a coastal walk, with the shape of the shoreline offering a different setting from the busier harbours.

The approach lanes are steep and narrow, and parking is limited. Plan your arrival before setting off, and choose a walk suited to your group rather than assuming an easy route from every inland address. The local visitor guide introduces cafés and other places to eat around Talland; check current arrangements with the venue before making a special trip. For the shore itself, take account of the tide and conditions on the day.

04

Looe and Polperro · harbour days and coast paths

Looe and Polperro provide two different starting points for exploring this stretch of South Cornwall. Polperro’s harbour sits in a steep-sided valley, with paths onto the surrounding cliffs. In Looe, combine time around the town with a carefully chosen section of the coast rather than trying to fit a long hike into a short visit.

The South West Coast Path’s route information helps put the distances and terrain into context. Its Polperro-to-Portwrinkle route is a longer itinerary, so use the map to choose an appropriate section and arrange your return. Coastal walking here includes climbs and uneven ground. Check current route notices and transport before committing to a one-way walk.

05

Food, drink and independent shops

For a wider choice of shopping and places to eat, explore the nearby centres of Looe and Polperro. The local visitor directory brings together food shops, makers and independent businesses, with location details that help you group stops into a day out. Browse for the kind of visit you want, whether that is local produce, a harbour lunch or a small souvenir.

The food-and-drink shopping directory includes bakeries, confectionery and other local producers. Follow individual listings to check their own current information before travelling for a particular item. Businesses linked here are useful starting points to investigate, not paid recommendations or promises about availability.

06

Community life · Pelynt and Sclerder

Pelynt’s parish directory offers a way into local groups, including the Women’s Institute, the Royal British Legion and activities associated with the village hall and social club. Use the council’s news and the group contacts to find current arrangements; this guide does not copy weekly schedules that may change.

Nearby Sclerder Abbey is home to the Chemin Neuf Community. Its programme includes quiet days, retreats and the Green Abbey ecological project. These are organised opportunities to take part in community life, so consult the abbey’s calendar and contact the organisers about participation. The Trelawny Benefice website provides a separate source for local Anglican churches and their activities.

07

Getting here · rail and onward travel

The Looe Valley Line connects Liskeard with Looe, following a scenic route through the valley. The rail partnership’s guide explains the line and offers ideas for exploring from its stations. Arriving in Looe still leaves an onward journey to Trelawne, so plan the last part of your trip using your accommodation or destination’s exact address.

Use current journey planners for buses, trains and the return trip. Rural roads and a short distance on a map do not necessarily make for a convenient or comfortable walk. If you are staying locally, ask your host about the appropriate arrival point and access arrangements rather than relying on the place name alone.

08

Everyday essentials · useful local contacts

Pelynt Parish Council is the starting point for parish news, meetings and local matters. Cornwall Council handles wider services across the area, and its website provides a route to the appropriate department. For health services, search the NHS service finder using your actual postcode so that results relate to where you are staying.

The enquiry form below is for this independent guide and domain enquiries. It does not contact the parish council, holiday park, accommodation providers or health services. If you suggest a correction or a useful local resource, include the place and a source link so the information can be checked.

09

Similar names · Altarnun and Falmouth

Historical research can also lead to Trelawny around Altarnun in Cornwall. Kresen Kernow’s archive distinguishes estate material for Trelawne in Pelynt and Talland from Trelawny Farm in Altarnun and Laneast. If you are tracing a family or property, use the parish and archive description to identify the right place. Altarnun Parish Council’s history page gives context for that separate area.

Trelawne Hotel near Maenporth and Mawnan Smith, in the Falmouth area, is another distinct search result. It is a business sharing the name, not the manor or holiday park near Looe. Use the hotel’s own website for its location and bookings. These distinctions help keep destinations clear without treating every business name as a separate village.
